One of the simplest pleasures in life is to read. Whether it’s curled up on the couch with a warm cup of tea, or laid back on the sand with sun beating down on you, reading is one of the easiest ways to relax.
I love to read. I always have. When I was a toddler I was most at peace walking up and down the aisles of book stores or libraries, and would throw tantrums that involved violent kicking and painful sobs when my parents dragged me out. That was before I even knew the alphabet. By the time I was in kindergarten I had read Moby Dick (see: “Matilda”) and was constantly getting in trouble for being caught reading under my covers with a flashlight after lights out. Rewards for good behavior or strong report cards were of course, trips to the library, or if I was really lucky, a favorite book was actually purchased to add to my already overflowing collection. This passion for the written word has continued into adulthood, and while my parents no longer reward me for eating all my vegetables, they do know where to buy gift cards should they need a gift for me.
In 2013 I read 28 books totaling 10,000 pages. Sure – to some this may seem like a lot, but to anyone who loves reading as much as me, you know this is a small drop in the ocean. As I rang in 2014, amidst the clinking of champagne glasses, sequined dresses and bow ties, I couldn’t help but think of Jay Gatsby and the glamour that was the jazz age. Jay was a man who was so in love with something, so completely head over heels enamored that he made it his mission in life to capture it, and to make it his. To Jay, Daisy was his one true love, and he died trying to hold onto her. No matter what happens in life, I know that one of my true loves is the written word.
Noun’s are fleeting, but the impressions they leave behind are eternal.
That is why, in the glamour of those first few minutes of 2014, I decided to really step up my game. 52 books in one year. A book a week, and all the while working towards reading 1,000,000 pages of literature in my lifetime. A lofty goal, but an interesting journey nonetheless. And a journey I wish to share with you all. No, I am not cooking a new Julia Child recipe everyday, but perhaps for those of you who love to read and are looking for a place with rapid suggestions, (or warnings to steer clear), then maybe a book and its recommendation a week will suit you just fine.
And so the journey begins, may the force be with you.
