I know, I know. I’m a bit late to the Gone Girl train. I will admit that this one has been in the stack on my bedside table for quite some time now, but it took it becoming my book club’s choice this month for me to finally commit to reading it.

I had heard a LOT about this one, with many people recommending it to me because it had “such a great twist”. It’s probably because I read and watch a lot of true crime stories that I really didn’t find this book to have much of a twist at all. I found it predictable, dark, and frankly, quite sick. This was not an interesting story about a girl that is suddenly, gone. This was a boring, and irritating story about a couple that is so miserable with themselves and each other that I couldn’t help but gag. I truly felt like this book was a significant waste of time and can be deemed, at best, psychotic chick lit. I do know that a lot of people loved this one, so it’s more than possible that I am missing something here, but if I wanted to engage in the trials and tribulations of a sociopath and a narcissist I could turn on any news channel at any time of the day. Or an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Oh, didn’t you hear? Kim and Kanye got married last weekend! It’s the most talked about thing on all the news outlets if you can believe it! Shucks, if Kim loves Kanye half as much as Kanye loves Kanye then those two might actually have a shot. (I can’t take credit for that joke, as much as I wish I could.)

I’ve never read anything else by Gillian Flynn, but I am told this is her weakest novel to date, so I won’t write her off just yet. There were definitely glimmer’s of something very interesting and thought-provoking at work underneath all the swear words every other sentence, so I think I may just keep another one of her books on my beside table for a few months and eventually give it a try as well.

On to the next!
